games and things

I'm a game designer. I run Matheson Marcault with Sophie Sampson - we're a new company making games that engage with history, physicality and public space.

Most of my work is over at the Matheson Marcault website, but there are some personal projects here.

talking and writing

I like talking and writing about games. I've spoken at dozens of events including F.R.O.G. (where I delivered a keynote on replayability), Playful (on the history and potential of clapping games), GDC (where I explained the rules to 21 games) and Bit of Alright (on some of my favourite peculiar games from history). For more recent talks, see Matheson Marcault.

2014

There are videos of a few of my talks from further back:

  • Strange Games in History, at Bit of Alright (15 minutes / 2013)
  • Lobby Ludd, at Improving Reality in Brighton, about a deeply peculiar game from the 1920s (5 minutes / 2013)
  • Words as Performance, at a series of It's Nice That talks, on using words as well as rules to encourage the sort of gameplay you want (25 minutes / 2012)

Or you can read a few of the things I've written below.

Deadly Serious Games / Bit of Alright / 2012 A writeup of a talk about games in fiction, why they turn deadly, and what that tells us about our hopes and fears for what games can do.
